Da Lat Market Print E-mail
In the morning, the Dalat market -a harmonious architectural work -gathers people of all ethnic origin, wearing multicolor traditional costumes, and coming from surrounding villages.

Dalat abounds in fresh vegetables and fruits, which are piled up like mountains. One of the most appreciated of them are avocadoes which are rich in lipids, and strawberries which are much bigger and more fragrant than mulberries. Vegetables and fruits are daily sent by truck- loads from Dalat to Saigon. They are also exported to many countries.

Originally located in Anh Sang Hamlet in 1929, Da Lat Market was later moved to its current location on the left side of Hoa Binh Quarter. During its early days, the market had a corrugated iron roof and was kept in place with trees, so people called it "Tree Market" (Cho Cay). In 1937, a large fire broke out, and the market was completely burnt down. French envoy Lucien Anges ordered a new market built with bricks to replace the old   one. The front of the market is decorated with the logo of Da Lat Town. The logo features a young man and a young woman of the Cơ ho ethnic minority, a tiger and a Latin saying, which means "giving happiness to one and freshness to the other."

At the Dalat market, tourists can see and buy a wide range of art and craft articles made by the skilful hands of people who have come here from various parts of the country .These include fur clothes and hats, rattan boxes, handbags made of "ivory bamboo" tapes, pressed flowers, wooden logs for grafting orchid flowers, and especially engravings on pine wood with a "fire-pen" devised by a family still reserves the copyright.

Today's Da Lat Market is a multi-story building. It was designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu and is considered one of the most beautiful market structures in Viet Nam.
