At present, there are 117 markets in Haiphong City, covering an area of 306,402 sq meters. 29 markets are located in the urban districts while 81 markets are set up in the rural districts. There are four first-grade markets (one of which has been operated by joint venture companies), 13 second-grade markets (one of which has been operated by limited liability companies) and 100 third-grade markets. 10,500 trading households registered long-term business, accounting for 43% of the total number of individual trading and service households in the city. 8 to 10 new first-grade markets shall be built in the city by 2010 and 2020. There shall be 3-4 lead farm produce and fisheries wholesale markets; 3-4 fresh flowers, ornamental plants, fancy fish and breeds wholesale and retail markets; 2-3 farm produce and fisheries evening markets and 2-3 food & drink night fairs. 4 to 6 new markets are expected to be set up in the newly established districts and centralized industrial parks, like Quan Toan. The prospective wholesale markets shall comprise of food and farm produce markets in the districts of Hung Vuong and Hong Bang. These markets, covering an area of 5 hectares, are seen a hub of sale and distribution of farm produce for Haiphong and the northern coastal region. In addition, a fisheries wholesale market is projected to be built in Kien Thuy, Do Son. It is expected that all the communes and Bach Long Vi Island District shall build modern markets, gradually eliminating temporary markets made of bamboo and leaves. Big markets in Haiphong City 1.
